Has anyone else noticed that the taxi's at longyang station in Shanghai REFUSE to use their taxi meter. i'm talking about the station you get off at when you catch the maglev from shanghai airport. they all try to rip you off and quote a price. i'm just surprised they are getting away with this. Recently i told my taxi driver to make sure she used her meter. she said she would so i put all my luggage in then as we start moving she tries to tell me she'll charge me 200 which will be cheaper than the meter so its a win for them both. i explain 'NO.. i know this fare will be around 40 kuai'. But she wouldn't budge so eventually i just got out of the cab. i ended up taking the subway.

ive spoken to other taxi drivers and they say the taxis do there because they just need one new tourist to pay 200 kuai and they've made good money for the day. but they really shouldnt be getting away with it particularly at that station.

Yeah, I've noticed that, too. Sometimes they even refuse to go to PuXi, because it is "too congested".

It really is an obvious place in Shanghai to be doing this...a very high percentage of the people who take the maglev are bound to be foreigners, they've got a lot of luggage and money...and first time travellers are probably going to think twice about taking the subway...In a situation as the one you found yourself in, just refuse to get out, or help her out by turning on the meter.

Taking the Maglev train once is "an experience", however If you're not planning to take the MTR or have someone pick you up do not take the Maglev -- the "taxi queue" is usually a scam. They even jam up the access way and prevent "decent" taxis from coming in. It's better to take the bus or a taxi from the Airport (also pay attention to taxis at the airpot).

Yeah If it's those red coloured taxis and the drivers are all hanging out together outside of their taxis like a pack of hyenas, stay away.

Those red taxis are known for that, as they're all privately owned. Walk on the other side of the maglev station and you'll find many streets and flag down a passing taxi.

It just comes down to them being lazy. I gave them a speech once about being worse than beggars and they got upset because they knew what I was saying was true. I told them that they should be ashamed and they made China lose face.

I'm surprised that the Shanghainese government allow them to prey on poor unsuspecting tourists.
