Ian_Lee Posted February 19, 2004 at 07:29 PM Report Posted February 19, 2004 at 07:29 PM Ang Lee is one of the few cross-cultural directors. The Chinese movies that he directed like "Pushing Hands", "The Wedding Banquet", "Eat Drink Man Woman" are very Chinese. The theme of all these movies are about traditional Chinese moral values encountering western culture in the modern society. On the other hand, the Hollywood movies that he made like "Sense and Sensibilites", "Ice Storm", "Hulk" are very western. There is not even a trace that these movies were directed by someone not born/raised under western culture. Regarding his controversial movie "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" which won worldwide applause except Mainland, was this movie made exclusively for western audience as many Mainland film critics commented? Well, the other day I read what Jin Yong wrote about Lee Ang. Jin said that none other directors could interpret Chinese martial art novel better than Lee Ang did. Jin said that Lee is like an old time story teller who can pick up any novel and tell the story starting from anywhere in the novel (In fact CTHD was actually an adaptation of just some chapters in a long novel). Lee's narration is so vivid which would make the audience fully immersed. By the way, Lee said late last year when he visited his alma mater in Tainan that he would trade all his accomplishment with the past youth years. But Lee is only 49 years old. Lee happened to be a schoolmate of Chen Shui Bian. Quote
