can anyone tell me the diffrence between 无论如何 and 不管怎样?? I read they both mean "anyway" or "in any case" but I would really like to know when to use one or the other. Also, I want to know which one i should use to change the subject on something, like if i want to say...

"well enough about X, anyway, lets talk about Y"

thanks so much for any help :)

Hi Strawberries513:

I will try to partially answer your questions, the second of which I am more sure of than the first. But I'm sure another reader will prove more thorough, as I've only formally studied Chinese for a semester, and have only lived in China for 2 1/2 years.

A very 口语 form of "anyway," as in your example, is 反正。If you listen for it, you'll hear that's it's often used. So maybe a rough translation of your phrase below would go:

那么,X就这样吧。反正,Y呢。。。

I think your first question, as to the difference between无论如何and不管怎样may be a subtle one. Whereas 无论如何seems to be more 书面语and somewhat formal, 不管怎样seems a bit more informal and 口语. I also believe 无论如何has a stronger tone, maybe implying more dire consequences if the needed actions are not performed.

I hope that a) I've not given you any incorrect i

无论如何 and 不管怎样 only mean "anyway" in the sense of "whatever the situation is (it doesn't matter)" or "in any case", so you could say something like,

A: 他是个窝囊废

A: He's a good-for-nothing wretch

B: 不管怎样,我还是想嫁给他

B: In any case, I still want to marry him./I want to marry him anyway.

In this context, I believe 无论如何 and 不管怎样 are fully interchangable (though 无论如何 is possibly more bookish language)

As for "well enough about X, anyway, lets talk about Y", I guess either of 无论如何 or 不管怎样 would be OK, if the "anyway" is supposed to signify "whatever the situation is, it doesn't matter". As it sounds like quite an informal chatty sentence, 不管怎样 would probably better suit this oral situation. But if the "anyway" is just a word used to connect speech, then I don't think either 无论如何 or 不管怎样 would be appropriate.

I'm not a native Chinese speaker, so perhaps someone else can give you a better answer.
