Weronika Posted July 21, 2006 at 06:57 PM Report Posted July 21, 2006 at 06:57 PM 我给你介绍一下这是我的爱人... This is a sentence in Teach Yourself. The writer said that: 一下 "having any specific meaning" in this sentence. So do I need it? It's enough 我给你介绍这是我的爱人... ? When do you use 一下? Thanks. Quote
HashiriKata Posted July 21, 2006 at 09:22 PM Report Posted July 21, 2006 at 09:22 PM Without 一下 in this case, the sentence may sound a little stiff, so 一下 is often used soften the tone, to make what one is saying more casual/ less formal/ less abrupt. In this sense, 一下 doesn't contribute any specific meaning. Quote
AlexBrit Posted July 21, 2006 at 09:49 PM Report Posted July 21, 2006 at 09:49 PM It's just like in English, for example, when one says 'I'll introduce you to my friends a minute' The 'a minute' is a discourse strategy to soften the statement. Quote
adrianlondon Posted July 21, 2006 at 11:45 PM Report Posted July 21, 2006 at 11:45 PM You could also repeat the verb (ie say 给你介绍介绍). They both change the sentence from "I will introduce you" to "let me introduce you" which, as everyone else has already said, serves to soften the tone. Quote
Joffrie Posted July 22, 2006 at 05:23 AM Report Posted July 22, 2006 at 05:23 AM 我给你介绍一下这是我的爱人... I am a Chinese. To my knowledge, a comma should be added after 一下, which would be more grammatically correct. And we can imagine the scene that after the comma, the speaker will give a pulse while looking at his wife and introducing her to the person. Yet the word 一下 do not have specific meaning, it just help soften the statement and try to be more friendly. And the sentence would be more like a formal one, if you deleted the word. For example, in a very formal occasion, a person (maybe an official) would say 请允许我给您介绍我的夫人。 Quote
Weronika Posted July 22, 2006 at 06:24 AM Author Report Posted July 22, 2006 at 06:24 AM Thanks! Can I use it in every situation to soften the statement? Or are there commons situations? (for ex: introduce somebody) Quote

Joffrie Posted July 22, 2006 at 02:46 PM Report Posted July 22, 2006 at 02:46 PM Well...Alexbrit has given some examples which are based on google. However, not all of the information from the Internet are reliable. 汗南都周刊一下 is a wrong expression, while 使用Google工具栏百度一下 is coined by some young guys in the southern part of China, and I may say that it is not a standard Chinese, though it is understandable. I am not a Chinese major, yet I may say that 一下 is only used in informal occasions or oral Chinese. Hope my explanation helps! Quote
Weronika Posted July 23, 2006 at 08:09 AM Author Report Posted July 23, 2006 at 08:09 AM 'course! Thank you!! Quote
HashiriKata Posted July 23, 2006 at 10:53 AM Report Posted July 23, 2006 at 10:53 AM Can I use it in every situation to soften the statement? No! Not indiscriminately.Or are there commons situations? (for ex: introduce somebody) Yes! They are the situations where you want to soften the action indicated by the verb, making it less imposing or less troublesome, and you'd therefore appear more polite. So, since 一下 is used to add social politeness and not lexical meaning (一下 also has a specific meaning in a separate usage but that doesn't concern us here), the best way to master it is by learning from concrete examples. I'll give you a few to start off with (but if Chinese native speakers spot anything unnatural in the examples, please let us know):等一下,我还有话要跟你说。(Wait a minute, I've still got something to tell you.) 我好像发烧了,我得量一下体温. (I seem to have got a fever. I'd better take my temperature.) 我没听懂,请您再解释一下。(I don't understand, can you please explain it again?) 你能用英语翻译一下吗?(Can you translate it into English?) 我想问一下你的电话号码。 (Can I have your phone number?) 我想跟你们商量一下出发的时间。(I'd like to discuss with you about the time for our departure) 这部电影非常好,我建议你看一下儿。(This film is very good, I'd suggest you to see it.) 我们先休息一下吧!(Let's first have a break!) xiaocai Posted July 24, 2006 at 03:45 PM Report Posted July 24, 2006 at 03:45 PM 汗南都周刊一下 “汗⋯⋯一下” is not really a "wrong expression", at least not at here. Its quite an informal way to mean something amusing or embarrassing. (actually I found it's impossible for me to find an acurrate translation with my limited vocabulary:oops: ) Quote
