anonymoose Posted July 23, 2006 at 08:41 AM Report Posted July 23, 2006 at 08:41 AM 女性的妖娆,常常被冠“妩媚”,杨家溪的山水,正恰可以“妩媚”二字称之,“妩媚”得让人去过不知返,归来还想去。 What does 冠 mean in this sentence? I searched my dictionary, and is has: 1. put on a hat/cap 2. rank first, be first 3. champion, first place 4. crown with; precede with/by None of these really seem to fit in the context of the sentence above. It is guàn and not guān, right? Also, how is 恰 to be interpreted here? Again, my dictionary says: 1. proper; appropriate 2. just; exactly; precisely But I think either of these could fit. 正恰可以 could mean either "can appropriately" or "exactly can". I guess the meaning is similar, though "exactly can" implies a better suitability than "can appropriately". Or perhaps this distinction isn't made in Chinese, and two separate concepts are used in English to describe the same idea in Chinese. Quote
skylee Posted July 23, 2006 at 11:34 AM Report Posted July 23, 2006 at 11:34 AM 冠 can also mean to give a name or to be given a name (to be called something). My favourite dictionary gives this explanation "加上某種名號". Here, it means "is called/is described as". For me, 恰 here means "happens to be". Quote
semantic nuance Posted July 23, 2006 at 12:54 PM Report Posted July 23, 2006 at 12:54 PM 冠--to be labeled as 恰--rightly to be.... Hope it helps! Quote
anonymoose Posted July 23, 2006 at 02:42 PM Author Report Posted July 23, 2006 at 02:42 PM Thanks for your responses. I think it's a lot clearer now. I don't know why my dictionary doesn't contain this use of 冠... Quote
seesaw Posted July 30, 2006 at 12:16 AM Report Posted July 30, 2006 at 12:16 AM 因为“冠”在用来表示“标以怎样的名称”的意思时,其实是一个比喻。 我们用“给某某戴上什么帽子”来比喻“怎样的称呼某某”。 下面是一个没有明确地(explicitly)用到“冠”的例子: 某某某被无辜地扣上了卖国贼的帽子。 Quote
Yukito Posted August 16, 2006 at 06:51 AM Report Posted August 16, 2006 at 06:51 AM 女性的妖娆,常常被冠“妩媚”. the more integrated expressing is: 更完整的表述是: 女性的妖娆,常常被冠以“妩媚”.之名 the meaning of 恰 and 正 in this sentence are the same,is: just. both used can emphasize the expression. (加强语气/表达效果) “妩媚”得让人去过不知返,归来还想去 here you shouldn't use the quotation mark. in general 冠(guan1) is a noun and guan4 is a verb 冠 guān <名> 从“元”(人头),从“寸”(手)。意思是:手拿布帛之类的制品加在人的头上,即“冠”。本义:帽子 鸡冠 cockscomb 冠 guàn 1,〈动〉 戴;戴帽子 [put on a cap or hat] EG:被冠以XX之名,means 被扣(戴)上XXX帽子; 超出众人;超过;位居第一 [precede;crown with;surpass] 2,<名> 冠军: 胜利的奖赏或荣誉的标志,尤指代表运动中获得冠军的称号 [champion]。如:夺冠; 正恰可以“妩媚”二字称之 in this sentence,"可" just means "可以".("可以" is modern Chinese language and it used in spoken language."可" is written) 以.......(什么样的名字)称之 means call it by XXX (name),so,正恰可以“妩媚”二字称之,means just can call it by charming.
