ipsi() Posted July 23, 2006 at 11:19 AM Report Posted July 23, 2006 at 11:19 AM I'm trying to add some stuff to my bio on these forums to say what I'm studying (I can't type it in english, as it's too long...). What I get in Chinese is this: 我是维大的学生,我专业是会计和商业的法律和电学。 What I'm trying to say is this: I am a student at Victoria University, majoring in Accounting, Commercial Law and Computer Science. Now, I'm fairly sure that 维大 is the short form of Victoria University in Chinese (while I'd like someone to be able to confirm, I'd be surprised). A quick search on the internet suggests that 会计 is probably a decent choice for Accounting. The one I'm most worried about is 商业的法律, which I *hope* translates fairly litterally as "Law of Commerce". Is that right? I also reacall, vaguely, that 电学 was the way to translate Computer Science, rather than 电脑科学 which is what I first thought. So, can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track here? Thanks in advance, all. -ipsi Quote
skylee Posted July 23, 2006 at 01:49 PM Report Posted July 23, 2006 at 01:49 PM Almost. Consider -> 我是维大的学生,我的专业是会计、商法(or 商业法律)和计算机(or 电脑)。 Quote
tanhql Posted July 24, 2006 at 12:10 AM Report Posted July 24, 2006 at 12:10 AM you also can translate Computer Science into 电脑科技 or 电脑学. Quote
ipsi() Posted July 24, 2006 at 04:38 AM Author Report Posted July 24, 2006 at 04:38 AM Thanks! I was close, which is good to know. I also thought '我专业' looked wrong, but I couldn't say why. I'll stick with 商法 and 电脑学 to explain what I study for now, as they seem more 'correct' in my limited understanding of Chinese Quote
seesaw Posted July 27, 2006 at 05:50 PM Report Posted July 27, 2006 at 05:50 PM I really don't think "电脑学" is a good translation. Actually, you have a lot of other choices: (我的专业是)计算机 (我的专业是)计算机科学 (我的专业是)电脑 (我的专业是)电脑科学 Quote
ipsi() Posted July 28, 2006 at 01:23 AM Author Report Posted July 28, 2006 at 01:23 AM Bur. Could you expand on why you don't think it's a good translation? My knowledge of Chinese is fairly limited, which is why I'm asking here, but I don't see a problem with that particular translation. It does seem to correspond to other areas of study, like Math, which translates as 'Number Study' as I recall. So 'Computer Study' seems appropriate to me... In any event, I'll try it on my teacher, and see what she says. Quote
Fun123 Posted July 28, 2006 at 03:48 AM Report Posted July 28, 2006 at 03:48 AM Ok, I know this may sound frustrated, but the fact is "电脑学" is never used in Mainland China to discribe Computer Science, we usually use "计算机科学" or simply "计算机". If you check the admission brochures of most of the Chinese universities, you will find that that major is usually written as "计算机科学与技术". People can understand "电脑学", but we simply do not use it. ipsi() Posted July 28, 2006 at 06:51 AM Author Report Posted July 28, 2006 at 06:51 AM Doesn't sound frustrated. I'll switch to using 计算机科学 (and variants) then. I'm probably better off getting used to usages common on the mainland. Thanks for mentioning that. -ipsi Quote
tanhql Posted July 28, 2006 at 08:29 AM Report Posted July 28, 2006 at 08:29 AM 计算机 for computer is only common in china. in other chinese-speaking countries, 计算机 means calculator. Quote
