Weronika Posted July 29, 2006 at 12:09 PM Report Posted July 29, 2006 at 12:09 PM Do you know any chinese SKA band? Ska is a form of Jamaican music which began as early as the 1930s. Combining elements of traditional mento and calypso with an American jazz and rhythm and blues sound, it was a precursor in Jamaica to rocksteady and later reggae. It is the predominant form of music listened to by Rudeboys. Artists such as Symarip, Laurel Aitken, Desmond Dekker and The Pioneers aiming songs at these groups as early as the 1960s. Musical historians typically divide the history of ska into three waves. There was revival of note in England in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and another wave of popularity in the 1990s, mostly based in the United States. Two tone, Ska jazz, traditional ska, ska punk, newwave. Quote
Qcash3 Posted July 29, 2006 at 12:55 PM Report Posted July 29, 2006 at 12:55 PM I don't know of any ska bands in China, but I've heard that sometimes ska bands do perform at some of the bars and nightclubs there. Quote
roddy Posted July 29, 2006 at 01:11 PM Report Posted July 29, 2006 at 01:11 PM The only Chinese band I can think of that I've heard described as ska is reflector - might be worth a try. Quote

Weronika Posted July 29, 2006 at 05:56 PM Author Report Posted July 29, 2006 at 05:56 PM Lu, could you give me a link where can I find that band's webpage, or something about them? Ouch 哎哟 plays ska/punk. Reflector seems quite good, but a little bit far from my taste.. Thanks, maybe if somebody know another band, just tell me Quote
Alhazred Posted July 30, 2006 at 10:34 AM Report Posted July 30, 2006 at 10:34 AM They're not chinese but Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra are a mighty fine band. Byron Lee, leader of the Dragonaires, was a Jamaican of Chinese origin, too. Quote
Alhazred Posted July 30, 2006 at 10:49 AM Report Posted July 30, 2006 at 10:49 AM http://www.tokyoska.net/index.html http://www.byronleemusic.com/ Couldn't recommend any Byron Lee album, but his band backs the likes of Jimmy Cliff, Stranger Cole, The Maytals, etc. on the "This Is Ska" video shot in a JA club in the 60s and they do a really good work. Also, Ska sure didn't start in the 30s but in the early 60s. Quote
Lu Posted July 30, 2006 at 12:06 PM Report Posted July 30, 2006 at 12:06 PM That's Beijing mentions them here, and there's a review of their cd here (scroll down untill you get to 'Aiyo'), that's all I could find for now. Hope it helps. You could try looking for their music on baidu's mp3 search. Quote

lordkoos Posted August 9, 2006 at 09:40 PM Report Posted August 9, 2006 at 09:40 PM I was just reading this in the New York Times: "I’d rocked out to a Chinese ska band, the Scar, at the obscure 2 Kolegas bar (2kolegas.com)" The link is a dead end but maybe you can find out more about this band Scar.
