Hi. In September/October I am going to do some travelling in China and I have promised to buy some Chinese silk (as in the fabric - not items made of silk) for a relative here in Australia.

I will be in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Suzhou, Xi'an and Beijing. Could anyone advise me on where would be the better place to buy this material? Is there anything I should be aware of, or places to avoid that will overcharge me (as a tourist)?

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks!!

Suzhou is definitely the silk capital of China, or at least it used to be. There is an interesting silk museum in Suzhou that has live silkworms on display and shows the silk-making and weaving process.

As for purchasing silk fabric, I'm sorry I can't help much, but I suspect it is widely available throughout China if you know where to look for it.

I bet the prices at the silk factory are higher than average though.

I made a visit there last year and they had a lot of stuff, but it was expensive. I bet you can get just as good silk in beijing. But be careful for rip offs nylon etc.

Silk doesnt melt, nylon melts. So burn before you buy
