'Elementary chinese readers' (Sinolingua)

Has anyone used these? I think as textbooks they'd be terrible - the grammar explanations are too technical (and often seem garbled). But I've been using them to try to get my character recognition up so i can start to use intermediate level materials without too much pain, and they seem to be good for this...

I think that those books would be too technical for beginners, but overall, I have enjoyed the books that sinolingua has put out.
