Erikssc Posted August 2, 2006 at 04:39 PM Report Posted August 2, 2006 at 04:39 PM Hi, I just found out that I have received a scholarship to study at BNU from the fall semester. My scholarship only covers tuitition though which means I have to find accommodation myself. Of course by now all the single rooms on campus were taken so I am stuck with a double (F2). I am thinking about trying to find a room in a shared flat within the two week period where one can move freely within or out of the dorms. As I speak some chinese already I would like to find other non-english speakers to live with. Preferably chinese, but I guess Korean or Japanese are ok second choices. Does anyone know how to find these kind of flat mates? Is it normal for westerers to share flats with chinese? Appreciate any experiences from you guys. Erik Oslo, Norway Quote
gougou Posted August 3, 2006 at 07:56 AM Report Posted August 3, 2006 at 07:56 AM I used to share a flat with two Chinese guys. Found it here, and I seem to remember that there were quite a bunch around universities as well. A little heads-up: I had the impression that most Chinese sharing a flat do so purely for economical purposes, it is not so much about finding friends and having a good time. But you'll be studying anyway, won't you? Quote
gato Posted August 3, 2006 at 08:08 AM Report Posted August 3, 2006 at 08:08 AM Yeah, you can try a search with the keyword 师大. http://www.zhantai.com/cgi-bin/search?region=bj&area=H&group=H&keywords_i=%CA%A6%B4%F3&cat=12&minPrice_i=&maxPrice_i=&bedrooms_s=&nbrhd= Quote
adrianlondon Posted August 3, 2006 at 09:06 AM Report Posted August 3, 2006 at 09:06 AM BNU has a lot of Japanese and Korean students. I'll be there soon, for the new semester. I've got what appears to be a tiny two bedroom apartment and I hope they put a japanese or korean person in to share with me. However, knowing the way Chinese generally think about race they'll probably line me up with another bignose for company. Which I don't want. Still, as you say, we have two weeks in which to shuffle around and/or move off campus. Quote
Jamoldo Posted August 5, 2006 at 03:32 PM Report Posted August 5, 2006 at 03:32 PM Adrian and others, are you all at Lanhui, like I am? Quote
adrianlondon Posted August 5, 2006 at 05:59 PM Report Posted August 5, 2006 at 05:59 PM Nope, I'm in No. 3 International Students Dormitory (LIYUN APARTOTEL B3). I haven't got my flights yet, but expect to arrive around 6th September. Quote
Jamoldo Posted August 5, 2006 at 06:56 PM Report Posted August 5, 2006 at 06:56 PM Adrian, how did you score that? Apt number 3? By the time I signed up (mid June) only Lanhui was left. Oh well, I could always use the walk anyhow! I'm also looking into arriving around the 5th or 6th, no tickets yet. Quote
adrianlondon Posted August 5, 2006 at 11:16 PM Report Posted August 5, 2006 at 11:16 PM My trick? Apply late When I checked for accommodation a couple of weeks ago, all were available. You do know you can change your choice up until mid August sometime? So, get back to that accommodation site, plug in your detail, and see what's available now! Quote
Erikssc Posted August 6, 2006 at 11:56 AM Author Report Posted August 6, 2006 at 11:56 AM Thanks for the tip about zhantai.com. Seems to be some quite reasonable priced rooms there. Definitely much cheaper than the dorms. But what kind of standard can you expect for a room between 500 - 1000 kuai a month? Gougou, how much did you pay for your room? And did you have broadband access etc.? Adrian, the single rooms at BNU are definitely all taken. When I called them last week they almost laughed at me when I asked for a single:lol: . Have also regularly been visiting the page where you can change your booking and the singles are all taken. It won't show though until after you have clicked the booking button..."occupied, please choose another....". Too bad. If you are giving up your B3 room though, I'll be happy to take it over....!!! gougou Posted August 6, 2006 at 03:55 PM Report Posted August 6, 2006 at 03:55 PM Gougou, how much did you pay for your room?I paid 1030 a month for a nice, fairly large room on Andingmen Wai. Bathroom was not up to Western standards, but I found you get used to it very fast (at least I did).On top of the 1030 (30 in there was for a TV that was provided later), you still had water, electricity and internet fees. There were cheaper offers too, I think the cheapest one I've seen was 800, which was not as good, but still habitable. Quote
Jamoldo Posted August 6, 2006 at 05:08 PM Report Posted August 6, 2006 at 05:08 PM Adrian, I've been trying to change into the Liyun intl dorm number 3 for months now but it never worked out. oh well, I'm not too sad about it.... Quote
crow610 Posted August 10, 2006 at 07:45 PM Report Posted August 10, 2006 at 07:45 PM I was only able to get into Di Er Gong Yu and I applied in June! Hey Erikssc, Sorry to change the topic of this thread but I noticed that you recieved notification from BNU that they will be giving you a scholarship. How did they notify you? I have not heard back from them and are wondering if they even received my application. btw..this is for the Chinese Government Scholarship right? Quote
Erikssc Posted August 10, 2006 at 09:25 PM Author Report Posted August 10, 2006 at 09:25 PM Crow, it's a government scholarship through the Chinese Scholarship Council, but it's goes through an organization in my country. I got the notice from this organization. I guess the paper flow is BNU to Chinese Scholarship Council to Chinese embassy in my country to the organization to me....thats why it's so late....... and I applied in december! Quote
adrianlondon Posted August 10, 2006 at 10:16 PM Report Posted August 10, 2006 at 10:16 PM Aha - are you youngsters all on scholarships? Maybe that's why they don't give you the option of the expensive rooms. They want people like me to stump up the cash Quote
Jamoldo Posted August 11, 2006 at 01:34 AM Report Posted August 11, 2006 at 01:34 AM Adrian, my school, Dartmouth did give me a scholarship, but it wont cover nearly everything at all and BNU can't possibly know about it. I got Lanhui for a combination of reasons that I am unaware of... Quote
crow610 Posted August 11, 2006 at 07:45 AM Report Posted August 11, 2006 at 07:45 AM I applied at the last minute so I don't even know if they will consider my applicaiton. Guess I'll just have to wait and see. Quote
crow610 Posted August 11, 2006 at 07:58 AM Report Posted August 11, 2006 at 07:58 AM Hey Erikssc, I was looking at some old posts and I realized that I was the one who refered you to the scholarship. That means you have to give me 50% of it. haha..jk Hopefully they will notify me either way. Quote
Erikssc Posted August 11, 2006 at 09:19 AM Author Report Posted August 11, 2006 at 09:19 AM Haha crow, that post must have been many years old.... Actually the scholarship only covers tuitition which means I can choose to live where ever I want as long as they have free rooms. I think all the full scholarship students have to live in dorm no 1 since it's the cheapest one and included in the scholarship. ....And after trying to change my booking on their automatic-booking-web-page-thing several times every day for two weeks I finally succeded the day before the deadline! I'm now in a single in dorm 2 (F1)! Quote
crow610 Posted August 11, 2006 at 04:20 PM Report Posted August 11, 2006 at 04:20 PM Great! They look a lot nicer then no 1. I have a shared room in no 2 but if I know my roomate is gonna be a pain, I'm outta there! Quote
