geek_frappa Posted February 25, 2004 at 08:32 PM Report Posted February 25, 2004 at 08:32 PM after talking to my professors and mentors, they all agreed that leaving the foul language out of the dictionary is the best choice. but is it? Quote
skylee Posted February 25, 2004 at 11:12 PM Report Posted February 25, 2004 at 11:12 PM Ha?? Why? No it is not. Quote
geek_frappa Posted February 25, 2004 at 11:32 PM Author Report Posted February 25, 2004 at 11:32 PM Ha?? Why? No it is not. so it should be included? Quote
skylee Posted February 26, 2004 at 02:02 AM Report Posted February 26, 2004 at 02:02 AM Sure, why not? I think it is hard to draw a line between foul and not foul. How do you decide if the word 操 is foul or not (well in some context it is and in some it isn't)? To leave out some of the words/meanings the dictionary will be incomplete. And if I were a Chinese learner using this incomplete dictionary I wouldn't know if I had been insulted, would I? A dictionary is meant to help people understand the meaning/usage of words. Including such words wouldn't make it foul. These are my humble opinions. And I assume that you are talking about a Chinese dictionary. Quote
geek_frappa Posted February 26, 2004 at 02:07 AM Author Report Posted February 26, 2004 at 02:07 AM you make very good points, in my humble opinion. i will start adding "foul" words... ... with your help, of course. Quote
geek_frappa Posted March 9, 2004 at 01:21 AM Author Report Posted March 9, 2004 at 01:21 AM hey! many teachers are using my website for their classes. i don't think i should add the foul language. instead, maybe we can make a separate dictionary with all these things. teachers have been e-mailing me with praises, so i guess i have a niche market ... what is my next step? pazu Posted March 10, 2004 at 11:06 AM Report Posted March 10, 2004 at 11:06 AM Foul languages should be included. Fxxk is a difficult word to use. Cxxt is even more difficult as you would seldom see it in a movie. Quote

geek_frappa Posted March 10, 2004 at 07:06 PM Author Report Posted March 10, 2004 at 07:06 PM ya, the problem with hollywood is that good filmmakers often are not given money to make films. the bad movie makers get money every month for a new film. Quote
geraldc Posted March 10, 2004 at 07:44 PM Report Posted March 10, 2004 at 07:44 PM I think including rude words and phrases in a dictionary would be a good idea. There's a general problem with rude words/idioms/euphemisms in that they're not in the beginners dictionaries, so half the time you have to ask your friends or teachers what they mean e.g. 他妈的 打飞机 It would also be useful to point out potential misunderstandings e.g. the new meaning for 同志 etc. Quote
geek_frappa Posted March 10, 2004 at 08:53 PM Author Report Posted March 10, 2004 at 08:53 PM hmm... these are all good ideas. how will the parents react to the foul language? will they block my site? Quote
