teachinator Posted August 21, 2006 at 10:59 PM Report Posted August 21, 2006 at 10:59 PM Has anyone done this? I'll be in China for only three months, but my visit happens to coincide with the mid-term U.S. election in November and I'd like to vote in that election. I don't have a permanent address in China yet (going to school) so I can't just register absentee with that address. Currently I'm registered permanent absentee at my home address. The most straightforward thing would be to have my husband send my absentee ballot to me to mark and send back, but how likely would it be to get back from Beijing to the U.S. in time for him to turn it in on election day? mr.stinky Posted August 22, 2006 at 05:18 AM Report Posted August 22, 2006 at 05:18 AM have your husband contact your local registrar for particulars, but you should be able to provide them with your temporary address in china. they will send the absentee ballot to that address, which you check off and return in the provided envelope. or if you're near a consulate, i think you can vote absentee there. kudra Posted August 22, 2006 at 05:28 AM Report Posted August 22, 2006 at 05:28 AM if you are still in the US, you may be able to vote early at your county seat. I'd check that before trying to work out how to vote from China. Quote
889 Posted August 22, 2006 at 02:31 PM Report Posted August 22, 2006 at 02:31 PM There's a uniform application Americans overseas use to apply for absentee ballots. You can pick one up at a consulate or embassy (actually, if you call, they'll probably mail you one). So you long as your ballot's postmarked before the election day and received within 7 days after the election, it will be counted (remember how those Florida results hinged on foreign absentee ballots still coming in after the election). FSO Posted August 22, 2006 at 02:47 PM Report Posted August 22, 2006 at 02:47 PM At the Embassy's website: http://beijing.usembassy-china.org.cn/voter_registration.html The Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website: http://www.fvap.gov/ Enjoy! Quote
