xus-swede Posted August 22, 2006 at 05:04 AM Report Posted August 22, 2006 at 05:04 AM Anybody know where I can find one of these in for example Wudaokou? I arrived a week ago and my classes start 1 sep and my chinese is terrible. The only thing I found back home that could help me with mandarin tones was this stupid cassette tape. Stupid as I was I forgot to bring my stoneage cassetteplayer. I know I can find it somewhere in Beijing but since my chinese is terrible it's kind of hard. Anyone? Quote
Prodigal Son Posted August 22, 2006 at 07:04 AM Report Posted August 22, 2006 at 07:04 AM 1985 is your best bet. seriously, i'd forget about the tape, there are countless learning resources available on the internet alone. Quote
johnd Posted August 22, 2006 at 07:36 AM Report Posted August 22, 2006 at 07:36 AM I think you'll find cassette players (marketed for language learning) in any supermarket. Quote
billiardsmike Posted August 22, 2006 at 08:07 AM Report Posted August 22, 2006 at 08:07 AM Go the the Zhongguangcun electronics market behind the Hailon building. 6 floors of any electronic. I think I even saw some old radio tubes on the 6th floor. The products get simpler and older as you go up. Quote
xus-swede Posted August 22, 2006 at 08:27 AM Author Report Posted August 22, 2006 at 08:27 AM Allright. Well I sort of realized I should give up that stupid tape. There's plenty of stuff available everywhere. Thanks anyways. Quote
roddy Posted August 22, 2006 at 08:39 AM Report Posted August 22, 2006 at 08:39 AM I'm kind of out of touch with what supermarkets there are around Wudaokou, but any big one should have a counter selling mp3 players and the 复读机 - cassette players with digital recording and repeat functions to help with language learning, along with standard tape players. Failing that, a trip to Carrefour (if you need groceries) or any of the big electrical retailers (大中, 国美, etc, if you need appliances) should do the trick. Also keep an eye out for smaller shops with 'Mp3' or '随身听' written in the window - there could well be one on BLCU campus. If you have a computer, it's handy to get a tape player and a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable (I got one in Carrefour) so you can record from tape to computer. You'll probably find yourself wanting a tape player at some point anyway - lots of the Chinese learning materials are still only available on tape. If it all possible check the machine - some of them are pretty poor quality, and the tapes themselves are generally poor also. Quote
