之所以

Hi, have a look at the sentence below.

中国现代国际关系研究所的一位研究员说，这是个很棘手的问题。

中国之所以全力以赴争取俄罗斯石油管道项目，是因为其国内的石油供给日益减少。

Can anyone please tell me what does 之所以 means in the above sentence "中国之所以全力以赴争取俄罗斯石油管道项目，是因为其国内的石油供给日益减少".

I know that 所以 means all but I think it means something else in the above sentence. Also why is 之 combined with 所以. What does this 之所以 means?

Can anyone also give me some other examples where 之所以 is used so I can understand even better.

It means "the reason why", so 中国之所以.... would be translated along the lines of "The reason why China...."

You're also getting confused:

所以 means all

所有 means all.

And in case you didn't notice the pattern the way of saying it is 之所以。。。。。是因为。。。。。

So another way to think about it would just be saying 因为。。。。所以。。。。 but with the sentence flipped around (a bit of a simplified way of looking at it but it gets the idea across)

To fellow non-native speaker learners, how did you about learning all these types of grammar patterns? I've spent a long time picking up new vocab but still get stuck miserably when reading simple text as given here due to combination of basic words/characters that i already know but still unable to grasp the whole meaning.

write the structure down in simple way, we have:

之所以 AAA ，是因为 BBB 。----------- (pattern 1)

rearrange the structure, we have:

因为 BBB ，所以 AAA 。----------- (pattern 2)

The facts described did not change with the change of structure. But the mode changes.

因为 BBB ，所以 AAA 。----------- (pattern 2)

Because BBB, so AAA.

之所以 AAA ，是因为 BBB 。----------- (pattern 1)

It is because BBB that so AAA.

The author thinks BBB worth mentioning while AAA is widely known or obvious.

If you are referring to some way of trying to remember or something like that it is just a simple matter of remembering (also known as learning it). You just do, you don't complain about it's weirdness, why it should or should not be that way, but rather just take it as it is understanding that it's part of the language.

if we say 我之所以do this

that means "that's why I do this"

muyongshi is right. that's is the best attitude in learning the language.

Is this a 书里面 usage, or can it also be used in 口语？

之所以can be used in 书面语（but not 书里面），so as in 口语

You would be understood if you used it in speaking, but I think it's mostly 書面語.
